Enrique Castro was born in Veracruz, Mexico on September 4, 1973. The first son of a working class family, his influence to Mexican food started at the early age of 10 when his mother, Sara, opened a Mexican Taqueria selling homemade tamales, sopes and atole (hot drinks). His first duties began at 6:00 am every day when he selected vegetables, fruit, and supplies for the business before school.
After eight years, his mother expanded the Taqueria to a full service sit-down restaurant, and Enrique helped operate the restaurant while attending college in the evenings. He graduated with a Business Law Degree after 5 years.
In 2000, Enrique moved to Maui and his passion for cooking led him to work at different fine dining restaurants, from island style to American-Italian, where he quickly become a chef manager.
In 2004 Enrique decided to open his own restaurant, and Enrique’s Mexican Restaurant became a reality. Along with his wife and 5 employees, they created a “mom and pop” casual place with really great food at really affordable prices.
Enrique’s menu features authentic dishes and flavors like: Chile Rellenos, Tamales, Chicken Mole, and Barbacoa Style. Other popular dishes are: Mahi Mexican style, Veracruz Shrimp Cocktail, Menudo, Pozole etc.
Enrique’s is popular with local custumers and tourists as well, and in only three years of operation their revunues are double in gross sales with deliveries, takeout and sit-down services.
Enrique’s philosophy is “The customer is always right, no matter what.” He strongly believes in the values his mother taught him and that the one main ingredient for a successful restaurant is the food has to taste excellent, no matter how much you pay.
